H.M.S. Minotaur was one of three Minotaur class armoured cruisers completed for the Royal Navy in 1908 and 1909.

Service

Minotaur was commissioned at Devonport on 1 April, 1908, by Captain William O. Boothby, for service in the Fifth Cruiser Squadron.[8]

On 25 January, 1910, she became Vice-Admiral Alfred Leigh Winsloe's flagship on the China Station. On 8 October, 1911, Alacrity took over as flagship, but Minotaur resumed this role for 26 days from 5 March, 1912.[9]

She was re-commissioned at Colombo on 26 May, 1912.[10]

Minotaur commenced a refit at Invergordon on 26 October, 1915, going into the dock on the 29th.[11]

In November she was serving as flagship of the Seventh Cruiser Squadron.[12] She would leave the Seventh to join the Second Cruiser Squadron just before the Battle of Jutland.

Jutland

She operated as flagship for the Second Cruiser Squadron which she had just joined, under command of Captain Arthur C. S. H. D'Aeth. Her gunnery officer was Edward G. de S. Jukes Hughes, appointed to the ship on 6 January, 1914.[13]

She continued to serve in 2 C.S. until the end of 1918 when the formation was disbanded. She went with Achilles to Portsmouth.[14]

Alterations

An order for a design for a director system for Minotaur was issued on 22 February 1915 and orders for its supply made 12 April, 1916. Priorities for director fittings were such, however that it was only installed in August 1918.[15]

Radio

In mid-1913, it was decided to purchase a Type 9 Cruiser Auxiliary set for her.[16]
